I guess at the end of the first half of the New Orleans game, I thought this team might deliver on a promising start. But New Orleans has a horrid defense and the Bolts STILL couldn't finish them off. Denver? The Bunkos' kick returners, which looked shaky again last week, helped us get that 24-0 lead. The Chargers picked up where they were the week before and showed no ability to close out a team. My God, Rivers couldn't even lead us to a game winning field goal against FUCKING CLEVELAND.
Then there was a pick on the one-yard line against the Queefs just to remind us all that even in a win, we couldn't play smart. Tampa was another mess and last week looked like that Chicago game last year. I don't want to hear any more about how AJ left Rivers with no weapons or that the line sucks. AJ should be canned, but he'd leave behind one fucked up quarterback for us. This is the second straight year that Rivers has looked awful. I still maintain that the 2010 season was where the shittiness began. Rivers put up great numbers with Tutu, Crayton and McMichael, but didn't lead us back in a single game. Fittingly, just one such victory would have won us the division. Of course, who knows what horrors would have befallen us in January.
As I was watching Stafford, Schaub and RGIII on Thursday, I felt sick. It wasn't just the Tryptophan, I had a serious case of quarterback envy. I can finally see a world where Norv (and maybe even AJ) is fired. But I really fear what Rivers has become. It sucks that things are so hopeless before December has even arrived. A win tomorrow would keep Wild Card hopes alive, but we'd also be closer to being stuck with Norv.
Like you, I'll be watching. But as The Boss sings,
Everybody's got a hunger, a hunger they can't resist,
There's so much that you want, you deserve much more than this,
But if dreams came true, oh, wouldn't that be nice.
RIP, Larry Hagman
The Chargers are like Russia, a riddle wrapped in mystery inside an enigma. Carolina fired its GM already.enough already. Ownership is insufferable in this town-from the "fortress" mentality to the non donning of powder blues(every Sunday as it should be) Hopefully the 15,000 empty seats will send a clear message
Canepa and these local hacks suck, gotta be somebody out there better than Smith. Too much bad blood in the past with a plethora of players who must talk about the intractable AJ with others: FIRE AJ FIRE NORVhttp://www.nctimes.com/sports/football/professional/nfl/chargers/canepa-norv-s-gone-but-smith-should-stay/article_eed52759-496e-5ace-8be8-6892ffcea846.html
I listen to 1090 when they have a good interview on, but AJ coming back would mean he picks ANOTHER coach.
@Lucab12 exactly, he picked Norv when no one else would have, Norv was destined for coordinator-ship the rest of his NFL tenure and AJ thrust him on us. For that alone he is unforgiven never mind the treatment of Marty
Dave, nothing shameful about it. I got a lot of shit for saying Rivers should sit for a game last year. This year has been worse. You'll see I have wrote more than once on B/R that Rivers is the problem. Of course, the comments there are stupid as all hell for the most part.
@Lucab12 Yeah the comments at the B/R are really something. Every once in a while somebody will say something salient. But it's just a grade above yahoo message board fodder for the most part. I enjoyed reading your excerpt on fandom, will try to get on Kindle if available. Springsteen and/or Dead musical analogies will have to carry us until the AJ Norv departure. What are your thoughts on Andy Reid SD hiring? I think Rex Ryan would be great for the Chargers, some swagger on D, but that could just be me. Get a good play caller in with revamped O line, D with attitude, retool
@BoltBulk Well, Dave. Obviously living out here all my life I have seen Rex's aura get dimmed a bit. Definitely swagger is needed, however, once the Jets couldn't get past Pittsburgh (thankfully LT didn't score on 4th) his antics seem silly. Of course, I couldn't watch them in the playoffs, so I opted for Road House.
As for Reid, I worry about a retread. The Bolts need the next great coach, but Mike Riley probably has them scared.
@Lucab12 If Bolts go traditional hiring of hot O or D coordinator, Mike Nolan would look good with a suit ala Sid Gilman, sans Bow tie. Your lucky missing out on the local hacks assessment of this disastrous Bolt yr. Unless you live stream. Just not a lot of good coverage, LT(wearing his NFLN hat) thinks AJ will be retained though. A GM and Coaching overhaul would be most exciting. Hopefully LT is spouting his rote BS, and not truly an insider.
Sorry Ross, for shameless link posting, I never wanted to be right about this either.
This season has been truly trans-formative. I think all have been blind sided by Rivers decline I would have expected other things to factor in which never seem to take place, like locker room dysfunction. Perhaps the Bolts are just snake bitten, an NFL version of the Cubbies. Yet,
We have to fall back on what SD has to offer, best weather, best unis, best field, etc. etc... and get a GM who resonates with that vibe. The nice part is that it is no longer the 70's 80's, where it took yrs to rebuild, need to retool, in short order. A GM change is vital to the new era.
@Lucab12 Boltrunner is spot on, we have Joe Namath type mobility in Rivers, and that's 1974 Joe Willy. The league has changed since Rivers was drafted. I don't know if he could do some drills, lose some weight or something, but something has to give. Hell, Manning jumped over a guy in our game. It's a real liability, how much of his salary is guaranteed?
I will go back before '010 to show our dupedness-The most remarkable thing about AJ's draft from 05-09, what would be the nucleus of most teams, is that there are two remaining players-Weddle and Cason. So in reality, when the drafts did not pan out after 05, no new excitement on a rudderless D, we all should have known. Couple that with a don't let the door hit you on the way out Free Agency with VJ, Sproles, Turner etc. etc. etc. I give you the current Chargers. Maybe Norv was a brilliant coach in 09&010 and Rivers was playing out of his gourd. Alas, it has all come to pass. Rid the organization of AJ, Norv, draft a QB and reinvent Air Coryell.
Well, Whit, they won't do it until it's over. But I do believe Norv will go. I also think AJ needs to go too.
If you Google "Dean's Decision and A Wasted Year," Craig Elsten made the analogy I always think of. Dean is like King Theoden, under the spell of Grima Wormtongue.
Despite Harbaughs grind it up the middle gameplan, which was the worst offensive gameplan against the Chargers this year, they still won, because as soon as Flacco went to the air he completed passes like Rick making zombie headshots on The Walking Dead. We also looked like a bunch of zombies trying to tackle Rice on 4th and 29.
We are right now the most embarrasing organization in the NFL. This is the tipping point for this franchise. Do something about it or lose the fans. They came to the stadium ready for a victory yesterday and were sent home with wounds that will not be mended anytime soon.
Time for Spanos to show some leadership people. Fire Norv and AJ now.
Lost in the fog of our season of discontent, is the fact that Norv can no longer draw up plays. Although he will still get a job as OC somewhere, I almost feel sorry how low Rivers has made Norv look. We could at least lose 26-24 in the past. Yesterday should have been a blow out bolt win just like last yr against Bmore.
@boltrunner I don't think he should survive, Whit. Reyes and Liuget could be real good, but AJ has neglected the trenches and brought Norv to us.
Scott Mitchell, good one Whit. Yeah, I think these are bad habits that Rivers has had but now that age and less aggressive (and effective) receivers and backs..it's a fucking mess.
Ross, the problem with Rivers is one that I don't think can be fixed. His ability to excape the pass rush is nonexistent. When Rivers is given a clean pocket to work with he gets the job done but every opposing team knows that a little pressure goes along way for defeating the Chargers. Hell, Rivers can't even side step a defender. I haven't seen a quarterback this bad at excaping pass rushers since Scott Mitchell of the Detriot Lions. Now that's bad.
